Covid-19 Northern Ireland: More than 50,000 people have now tested positive in NI since start of pandemic

More than 50,000 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

The department's daily dashboard shows there have been 280 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people infected by the virus in Northern Ireland to 50,064.

In the past seven days, 2,955 individuals have tested positive for the virus.

There have been three further deaths as a result of coronavirus, with the death toll now standing at 936, the DoH says.

Belfast has had the highest number of new cases in the past week with 524, followed by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon with 372.

There are currently 438 inpatients in hospital with Covid-19.

As of 11am this morning, there were 37 patients in intensive care with coronavirus and 30 were using ventilators.

To date, 556,855 individuals have been tested for the virus.

Today, the Health Minister issued a statement to the Northern Ireland Assembly about the new restrictions coming into force this week.

Minister Robin Swann has said that the measures that will start on Friday are "essential" to stop hospitals being overwhelmed and infection rates spiking.

On November 27, hospitality and close contact businesses will have to close for two weeks, along with non-essential retail, gyms, leisure facilities and places of worship.
