COVID-19 national death toll reaches 578 after largest daily rise

The UK has seen the largest daily increase in deaths from coronavirus, with the total now 578 - up 115 from the day before.

The Department for Health and Social Care also said 11,658 people have tested positive for the virus, as of 9am on March 26.

This is up from 9,529 the day before.

Public Health England has also confirmed that the number of deaths in the UK also rose from 463 to 578, as of yesterday at 5pm.

The latest regional figures will be announced later today. You can follow our blog on coronavirus here.

In Bristol, the number of people infected with coronavirus rose from 37 to 41 on Wednesday - while there were also increases in South Gloucestershire.

South Gloucestershire now has 25 cases of COVID-19, up from 19 on Wednesday. There were no news cases reported in North Somerset with the district's figures remaining at 21.

Without a widespread testing regime, only those seriously ill with the severest symptoms of COVID-19 are generally being tested when they are admitted to hospital, so the number of unconfirmed cases is estimated by the authorities to be many times higher.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced strict new measures during a televised address to the nation on Monday night, in an attempt to quell the spread of coronavirus.

In the announcement he ordered people to only leave their homes under a list of "very limited purposes", banned public gatherings of more than two people and ordered the closure of non-essential shops.

Individual forms of exercise such as running, walking or cycling have bee limited to once a day and they must be done either alone or with other household members.

It was announced today (Thursday) that officers will have the power to enforce rules on staying at home and avoiding non-essential travel from Thursday.

They can order members of the public to go home, leave an area and have the power to disperse a group.

Those who ignore tougher restrictions on movement could be hit with a £60 fine initially and another for £120 for a second offence, the Home Office warned.
