Covid-19 loosening its grip on Renfrewshire as new death figures published

There have been no new coronavirus deaths in Renfrewshire for the fourth consecutive week.

The death toll for the area in which Covid-19 is noted on the death certificate remains at 206.

New figures, released yesterday, show there have been no further deaths linked to the virus since the week of July 6.

To date 99 people have died in care homes, 98 in hospital and a further nine at home.

The figures mean Renfrewshire remains in the top five local authority areas worst affected by the disease.

The new statistics, released by the National Records of Scotland, come as Nicola Sturgeon confirmed 15 new cases in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area are being closely monitored.

Speaking as she reintroduced lockdown restrictions in Aberdeen, the First Minister said: “There are also 15 cases, according to my provisional information, being reported in the Greater Glasgow d Clyde area, and we will be paying very close attention to those and any possible patterns there as well.

“For the whole of Scotland, an additional 64 positive cases were confirmed yesterday, which includes the 36 mentioned in Grampian.

“These 64 cases, which is the highest daily number we’ve reported for quite some time, represent 1.3 per cent of the people who were newly tested yesterday.”

The 36 cases in Grampian has seen the First Minister force the closure of bars and restaurants in the granite city and reintroduce the five-mile travel ban for leisure and recreation.

Across Scotland, there were seven Covid-related deaths in the week to August 2.

This is the second lowest weekly total for deaths involving Covid-19 since the first death was recorded in early March.
