COVID-19: Libraries across Edinburgh close as fines for late return waived

More than 10 libraries have closed their doors today in the Edinburgh area amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Those that have remained open for the time being have cancelled all events that were due to take place.

As the coronavirus begins to makes its presence felt, libraries closing their doors follow in the footsteps of GP’s surgeries and day-care centres for the elderly.

Many cafe’s and restaurants in the capital have already shut their doors.

The National Library of Scotland reported that they were closing their buildings in Edinburgh at George IV Bridge and Causewayside from 5pm today (Wednesday 18).

In an apologetic post on Twitter they explained it was in line with government advice and directed users towards their online resources.

Midlothian libraries announced yesterday that they were closing all nine of its libraries from the end of Tuesday (March 17) until further notice.

However, don’t worry if you have a book due, Midlothian library service are waiving all fines over this period.

In East Lothian, the council has said it has taken the decision to close all of its 13 libraries at 5pm each day.

They said evening opening times would be cancelled until further notice but Saturday/Sunday opening hours will continue as normal.

They have also cancelled all their LEGO clubs in libraries until further notice.

They also announced that due to coronavirus, Ormiston library will only be open on Fridays until further notice 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm.
