The annual fair of Tarnetar, also famous as the Tarnetar Mela, stands cancelled for this year in a move to curb any spread of COVID-19. It is held in Gujarat's Tarnetar village and celebrates the marriage of Mahabharata's Arjuna and Draupadi. The big event was cancelled last year as well, when COVID-19 hit India. Gujarat has barred any gathering of more than 400 people, which has also led to the cancellation of the fair.
This annual event is celebrated in the village for three days in August - September. It is widely famous and attracts a large number of devotees and enthusiasts from all across the country and the world. It celebrates the state's rich culture and diversity, and the three days are full of folk performances, music, dance and more. It also brings together young tribal men and women, who are scouring for partners.
It is a treat to participate in the fair which lures with its tribal art performances; the famous raas dance is a major highlight of the event. Reportedly, the fair sees hundreds of women performing the dance. It also attracts a number of sadhus from across the country, a lot of them participating with folk music instruments in tow.
While the gathering for the fair has been cancelled, the Trinetreshwar Temple will be open to devotees. All devotees have been instructed to follow all COVID-19 protocols and SOPs, laid down by the authorities.
