NSW recorded another 681 new local cases
That's the highest daily total the state has ever recorded.
NSW recorded one more death, a man in his 80s who had underlying health conditions. That brings the state's total fatalities in this Delta outbreak to 61.
And the regional lockdown was extended until August 28 — it had been due to end this weekend.
Darwin's stay-at-home order ended but Katherine faces another day of lockdown
The NT recorded no new coronavirus cases overnight, but wastewater testing has shown a weak positive result in Darwin CBD and a positive result in Katherine.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the Katherine lockdown was being extended because key close contacts in the area hadn't been located.
He also declared both Sydney and Canberra airports as COVID hotspots, effective from 5:00pm ACST.
That's because officials still don't know how the case that triggered the lockdown caught the virus — but they think he picked it up while travelling from Sydney to Darwin via Canberra airport.
Genomic testing showed the man had the Delta variant, but didn't match up with any known cases in Australia.
The ACT recorded another 16 new cases
That brings the Territory's cluster up to 83 cases.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said nine cases were under investigation, five of them recorded on Thursday.
There are now more than 250 exposure sites across the ACT and about 21,000 people in home quarantine.
Mr Barr said it was "unlikely" the ACT would snap back to the same level of restrictions that were in place before the outbreak.
The lockdown is currently due to lift on September 2.
Victoria recorded another 57 new local cases — but most of those were in isolation
"I apologise for spoiling anyone's breakfast when they saw that number this morning," COVID-19 commander Jeroem Weimar said at the press conference later in the day.
Of those new cases, 54 are linked to known outbreaks and 44 were in isolation the entire time they were infectious.
But the source of infection for three new cases hasn't been established yet. They're in Glenroy, Ascot Vale and Doncaster.
Today also marks an unpleasant milestone for Melburnians — it's the 200th day lived under lockdown restrictions.
A smidge more than half of all eligible Australians have now had at least one vaccine dose
Data released on Thursday shows 50.2 per cent of Australians over the age of 16 have had at least their first dose, while 28.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.
In total, about 16 million doses have been administered nationwide — with nearly two million of those being administered in the past week.
At this rate, Australia is on track to have the entire adult population fully vaccinated by the end of the year.
And a lot more people will soon be eligible to receive their vaccine
The federal government has announced plans for all people aged between 16 and 39 to be eligible for a vaccine by August 30.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that cohort included 8.6 million people but he said they would not be able to book their appointments yet.
Mr Morrison also announced he was awaiting advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation about vaccinating children aged 12 to 15 years.
Defence Force troops are being deployed at the Queensland-NSW border
Overnight we learned that 100 soldiers would be sent to help police Queensland's COVID-19 border restrictions at Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's request.
The state has recorded another day of zero local cases, so the focus of today's press conference was on stopping the NSW outbreak from spreading to Queensland and increasing vaccinations.
About 1,800 people are still in home quarantine as a result of the Indooroopilly school cluster.
Yesterday, Ms Palaszczuk announced a further easing of restrictions in the state's south-east, Cairns and Yarrabah.
WA flags 'extreme risk' border restrictions for NSW
That would mean very limited exemptions for arrivals from NSW, who would have to spend 14 days at a government-approved quarantine facility.
NSW is currently classed as a 'high risk' state, which has slightly looser exemption limits.
Even if arrivals from NSW are approved entry under the current rules, they must quarantine for 14 days — either in a "suitable premises" or in a government-approved quarantine facility.
Premier Mark McGowan said the 'extreme risk' restriction would probably come into effect "in coming days".
He said 200 Western Australians returned over from NSW the past few days, with another 100 expected to arrive on Thursday.
The state recorded no new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.
No new community cases in South Australia or Tasmania
Speaking of no new COVID-19 cases, South Australia and Tasmania recorded another doughnut day with no new community cases.
South Australia recorded one overseas acquired COVID-19 case.
Our unemployment figure fell to 4.6 per cent but participation rates also dropped to 66 per cent
It's our lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate since December 2008, back when Australia just feeling the economic effects of the global financial crisis after a massive mining boom.
But the Bureau of Statistics says the main reason unemployment fell was because many people gave up looking for work during COVID-19 lockdowns.
"Normally when the unemployment rate hit a 12-year low, it would be a cause for celebration," Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said.
"But not today.
"As millions of our fellow Australians are in lockdown, as lives have been lost, and as the economy has been hit hard."
New Zealand's outbreak was linked to a traveller from Sydney
We already knew it was linked to the NSW outbreak, but we got more details about how.
Testing showed the current positive cases in NZ were a "close match" to someone who returned from Sydney on August 7.
"We believe we have uncovered the piece of the puzzle we were looking for and that means our ability to circle the virus and lock it down and stamp it out generally has greatly improved," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.
NZ is currently under a nationwide lockdown, with the country's cluster growing to 21 cases after 11 more were reported on Thursday.
