COVID-19 Ireland updates as 2,180 cases announced

A total of 2,180 new cases of COVID-19 have been announced in Ireland.

As of 8am today, 406 Covid patients are hospitalised, of which 71 are in ICU.

The Government could postpone the full end of lockdown next week to ensure Christmas is not cancelled, the Irish Mirror has revealed.

There is nervous concern in Cabinet after the sudden increase in Covid cases during the week.

This has led to a rethink on the further reopening of society with the lifting of most of the remaining lockdown restrictions next Friday.

Most figures in Government want to proceed but it will have to be done with “the utmost caution”, one senior Government source said.

The Irish Mirror asked one minister if Halloween celebrations could go ahead as planned with nightclubs open despite rising infections.

The TD replied: “To hell with Halloween, it’s all about Christmas. We have to get that right.”
