Covid-19 Ireland update: Over 5,000 new cases reported with 126 in ICU

A further 5,634 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed.

There are 684 patients in hospital with the virus.

Of these, 126 people are being treated in ICU.

The Department of Health has confirmed the cases this afternoon.

Dr Tony Holohan has warned that antigen tests aren’t being properly used.

He said: "(Antigen tests) have been used for quite some time, they can support the investigation of outbreaks. We’ve recommended them for use for example in screening of people who are household contacts.

"The widespread use of them where they’re used in A-symptomatic populations, the issue is that in the previous week, one in five adults reported that they used an antigen test.

"The majority said they used them when they had symptoms, that is not public health advice. Those who used them when they’d symptoms went on to take a PCR test and restrict their movements.

"Antigen tests aren’t being properly used, we need to focus on when to understand when we use them. If you’ve symptoms a PCR test is for you, you isolate and stay home until your PCR test is done."
