Covid-19 Ireland update: 4,650 new cases reported with 118 in ICU

The Department of Health has this evening been notified of 4,650 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

As of 8am today, 643 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 118 are in ICU.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health said: “Approximately 1 in 6 people in Ireland experienced COVID-like symptoms such as cough, sore throat, high temperature or other flu like symptoms in the past week.

“The single most important action you can take if you experience any symptoms of COVID-19 is to self-isolate and arrange a PCR test – not an antigen test.

"If you want to avoid passing COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses on to your friends, family or work colleagues, rapidly self-isolating as soon as your symptoms begin is the most important thing you can do," he added.

It comes as the latest 14-day incidence rates for Dublin have shown a stark increase in rates across the capital with North Dublin particularly badly affected.

The five areas worst affected in the capital remain in place but have seen incidence rates almost double in the last seven days as the country battles the fourth wave of the virus.

Fifteen Local Electoral Areas now have an incidence rate above the national average, up from 11 a week ago.

Balbriggan has the highest rate in the capital at 1383.6, followed by Ongar (1320) and Donaghmede (1312.7). In the previous figures released on November 8, these areas had 14-day incidence rates of 798.5, 887.4 and 658.

Other north Dublin areas that are showing a surge in Covid-19 infections include Artane - Whitehall (1239.7), Ballymun Finglas (1199.8), and Rush Lusk (1121.9).

It's not only the northside that's seeing a staggering increase in Covid-19 over the last week. South Dublin areas like Tallaght South (1091.2), Ballyfermot-Drimnagh (1039.8) have also seen large increases.
