Covid-19 Ireland update: 4,115 new cases confirmed as Tony Holohan says Omicron will become dominant variant in Ireland

A further 4,115 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed by the Department of Health this evening.

511 patients are in hospital with the virus, with 110 in ICU.

Earlier today, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said Omicron will become the dominant variant in Ireland.

Speaking with Bryan Dobson, the Chief Medical Officer said: "What we expect and our working assumption is that, if Omicron has the transmission advantage, it will become dominant variant".

He continued: "We don’t have an ambition to prevent this from occurring, because that doesn’t seem to be possible unfortunately."

"What we think is really important is that we try to slow down it’s spread as much as possible."

Dr Holohan said slowing down the spread of the new variant will give the booster program time to take effect.

"We are confident that the booster will be important in protecting against Omicron."
