Covid-19 Ireland: Two counties record no new cases in 24 hours as lockdown optimism grows

Two counties recorded zero new Covid-19 cases in the latest 24 hour stats as lockdown begins to effect cases figures.

Leitrim and Monaghan both saw no new coronavirus cases on October 30 according to the latest Department of Health data.

A further five counties - Kildare, Longford, Kerry, Roscommon and Offaly - saw less than five cases in the same period.

Just 416 cases were confirmed on Saturday, a major drop from recent figures as Ireland moves in the right direction.

Ireland's two week incidence rate also continues to fall with it now standing at 268.7 - little over a week ago that figure had surpassed 300.

Dublin, Cork, Mayo and Galway continue to be the parts of the country with the most cases although with much improved figures from previous weeks.

Dr Tony Holohan said on Saturday: "“We are making progress in suppressing the current rise of COVID-19.

"Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence.

"Nationally, our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.0.

“We are working collectively to achieve suppression, but it is too early to ease our efforts.

"The incidence is decreasing in young adults but it continues to rise in those aged over 75.

"We have more to do but we are on the right track.”
