Covid-19 Ireland today: Tragic milestone reached as NPHET reports 650 new cases and 57 more deaths

Public health chiefs have confirmed another 650 cases of Covid-19, as well as 57 more deaths.

The latest figures, announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) this evening, bring to 211,751 the total number of cases since the pandemic arrived in Ireland last spring.

Tragically, some 4,036 people have now lost their lives because of the deadly virus.

Today's figures come amid positive updates when it comes to Ireland's vaccine rollout, with the Taoiseach delivering an optimistic prediction for the Johnson & Johnson jab.

Micheal Martin today dubbed the single-dose J&J vaccine – which is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency –a "game-changer" in Ireland's Covid-19 battle.

He added that, if approved, the vaccine will allow the HSE to vaccinate a huge chunk of the population by the summer – something he said will transform life for those who've received it.

"Many people will have been vaccinated by the end of the summer and there is no doubt they will have a different life because of that," Mr Martin told TG4.

Elsewhere, new research has found that many people are less compliant with Covid-19 guidelines than they think they are.

Some people who believe they're following Level Five rules still have a "lot of discretionary contacts", according to research conducted by the Government and the ESRI's Behavioural Research Unit.

Liz Canavan, the assistant secretary at the Department of the Taoiseach, said today: "The study offers insight into where and how risks of transmission arise and will inform policy and communications regarding the opening of parts of the economy and society, while keeping Covid-19 under control."

She added: "Interestingly, some of those people think they are doing better that most people in complying. But they’re not. If you are one of these people and you think what you are doing is the norm, maybe think again."
