Covid-19 Ireland today: Six counties most at risk of not leaving Level Five lockdown as planned

A number of counties are far behind the rest in terms of suppressing the virus with six still having incidence rates of above 150.

The current plan is for all counties to leave Level Five on December 1 - and while Taoiseach Micheal Martin hopes to do that, he hasn't ruled out an exit on a phased basis.

Donegal and Limerick currently have Covid rates of well above 200 per 100,000 people and appear some distance off leaving Level Five.

Offaly, Waterford, Roscommon and Louth all have rates of above 150 per 100,000 over the last two weeks and still have work to do to reach the desired levels.

11 counties now have a rate of less than 100 per 100,000 with Wexford currently the lowest in the country at 37.4.

Latest from NPHET

Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said; “For 3 weeks we saw case numbers declining at a rate of 5 -7% per day and a reproduction number as low as 0.6.

"We are aware that case numbers have now stopped declining and as a consequence the reproduction number has increased to an estimated 0.7- 0.9.

The data strongly suggests that a small, recent increase in the level of social contacts has led to the increase in reproduction number we see now. A small additional effort to reduce our contacts will make a big difference to reduce disease incidence before December 1.”

Dr. Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer, HSE  “This pandemic has placed huge demands on our healthcare workers in addition to the standard care of patients. Their work now involves additional infection prevention and control measures which require constant vigilance and awareness. The best way we all can show our appreciation for their work is by doing your part to reduce community transmission.”
