Covid-19 Ireland today: Minister for Health's update, cautious optimism and six lockdown county outliers

A sense of optimism is gripping Ireland as cases begin to drop and lockdown appears to be working.

And with France, England and many other parts of the world reintroducing lockdown it appears Ireland was ahead of the curve in acting fast to stem the virus growth.

Just 416 cases were confirmed on Saturday, and while that figure is nowhere near where NPHET want it to be, it's certainly going in the right direction.

Here's a quick update this Sunday on the latest Covid-19 developments in Ireland.

Minister for Health update

Ireland's 14-day cumulative cases incidence rate is now amongst one of the lowest in Europe.

And Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has praised everyone for their hard work since lockdown began.

Minister Donnelly said: "Thanks to huge efforts by individuals, families, community groups, clubs and businesses across the country, Ireland is now bucking the trend in Europe in terms of new cases of #Covid

"I just want to say thank you to everyone for doing so much to fight this virus."

Cautious optimism

After 416 new cases were confirmed on Saturday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said the country is going in the right direction but it isn't time to get carried away.

Dr Holohan said: "We are making progress in suppressing the current rise of COVID-19.

"Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence.

"Nationally, our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.0.

“We are working collectively to achieve suppression, but it is too early to ease our efforts.

"The incidence is decreasing in young adults but it continues to rise in those aged over 75.

"We have more to do but we are on the right track.”

Six lockdown outliers

20 of the Republic of Ireland's 26 counties have seen a reduction in Covid incidence rates since lockdown began.

Just six counties have seen small rise in the 14-day figure although the overall picture appears to show restrictions working already.

Carlow, Laois, Mayo, Tipperary, Waterford and Wicklow have all seen small rises in the rates since lockdown began.
