Covid-19 Ireland today: Limerick spike, Garda crackdown on Stephen's Green and Bank Holiday plans

Ireland continues to battle against the Covid-19 pandemic however the country thankfully hasn't seen any major spike in cases so far.

With the vaccine rollout continuing to gather pace Ireland is set to go ahead with its reopening plan.

And while there are hopes that the lifting of restrictions will not been impeded there have been some concerns expressed in recent days.

Here's what you need to know about the Covid-19 situation in Ireland today:

Limerick spike

The Minister for Health and the Chief Medical Officer are to meet Limerick health officials and politicians this over rising Covid-19 figures in the county.

Minister Stephen Donnelly had a similar meeting in Donegal in previous weeks following a similar spike in cases in the county.

CMO Dr Holohan expressed his concerns about Limerick's spike this week saying: "Today we are reporting a significant increase in cases in Limerick with incidence increasing sharply to 411/100,000.

"There have been more than 800 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Limerick in the past fortnight, the majority of which occurred as a result of indoor gatherings. It is extremely important that everyone in the Limerick region continues to adhere to the public health advice.

"Please avoid crowds, wear a mask where appropriate, wash your hands, maintain your social distance, socialise outdoors and, most importantly, if you display any symptoms of COVID-19 or suspect you are a close contact of a confirmed case then attend a test centre for a free test."

Stephen's Green crackdown

Gardai on Thursday swarmed St Stephen’s Green after up to 200 youngsters broke through barriers and were “hanging off the rafters” of a bandstand that had been blocked off.

A video posted on Twitter showed two males pulling through the fencing and a group made their way into the monument before gardai were called by park wardens to control the “chaos.”

A source familiar with the site said a group of 200 or more people were raving with “boom boxes” and drinking close by the bandstand before the fencing was pulled apart.

It’s understood there was just one binman clearing up a significant amount of rubbish left behind on Thursday evening around 8pm when the park was cleared out by gardai.

Three wardens were present on-site who struggled to deal with the crowd before six garda patrol cars arrived on site.

There are fears similar scenes could be seen in Dublin city and across the country this weekend with good weather expected.

Bank Holiday Plans

After widespread criticism over Dublin City Council's lack of planning for people gathering outdoors despite the emphasis on an outdoor summer, plans are now in place to offer more facilities in the city.

A Dublin City Councillor last night said that there will be 150 toilets installed in the city this weekend as well as 80 barrel bins in anticipation of an increase in footfall on the Bank Holiday Weekend.

It comes after businesses and residents of South William Street criticised the council and the Government for not providing more options as a large amount of groups gathered there last weekend.

It was this gathering which led the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan to tweet his disapproval.

The aftermath of the crowds saw rubbish left all over the street - and in some cases faeces - leading DCC to act for this weekend.

Cllr Colm O'Rourke of Fine Gael said that "following requests, I have been informed that Dublin City Council will be installing an additional 150 Portaloo toilets, 54 large Eurobins and 80 Barrel Bins (13 additional) across the City from this weekend with a specific focus on high footfall areas in the City Centre."
