Covid-19 Ireland today: Cabinet to make Level Five decision, the restrictions expected and latest lockdown comments

The Cabinet will today meet to decide on if Ireland is to go to Level Five or reject NPHET's proposal for a second time.

NPHET made the six-week Level Five lockdown recommendation on Thursday with meetings taking place all weekend between health chiefs and party leaders.

And this afternoon the full Cabinet will meet and sign-off on the latest restrictions for the country.

Here's all you need to know about what is expected today and when you will hear what's happening.

Cabinet to make huge decision

After a meeting between health chiefs and the Government leaders again this morning, a full Cabinet meeting will take place.

Here the Ministers will trash out the latest advice and what they've discussed over the weekend before making a decision.

After this it is expected Taoiseach Micheal Martin will address the nation as to what is in store over the coming days and weeks.

The restrictions expected

It is widely reported that the decision revealed and restrictions imposed will be a mix of Level Four and Five on the Government's Living With Covid plan.

Non-essential retail will potentially have to close, people will be again urged to work from home, household visiting bans will remain while limits on how far you can travel could also be introduced.

Bars, restaurants and gyms are also likely to be shuttered again as Ireland returns to near April lockdown conditions.

It is also not expected that the restrictions will last six weeks with an earlier review likely to take place.

Latest lockdown comments

Minister Simon Harris said on Sunday he wouldn't be drawn on using the term lockdown but that stricter restrictions were to be put in place.

The Minister said: "The government will act tomorrow, the action will be decisive and it will be nationwide action...

"Tomorrow we will have to bring in more restrictions. Level Three has not worked.

"I don't want to be pedantic about the
phrase lockdown but I don't think that's exactly where we're going but there will certainly be more restrictions.

"In relation to businesses, we're trying to get the balance right here.

"We want to keep as much open as we can but we can't prolong the inevitable either...

"What government is trying to do is try to find that landing spot."
