Covid-19 Ireland today as 408 new cases confirmed with one further death

There have been another 408 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland, while one more person has died from the virus.

Of the cases notified today, 205 are men and 202 are women.

77% are under 45 years of age and the average age is 31 years old.

As of 8am today, 110 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 33 are in ICU. 9 additional hospitalisations occurred in the past 24 hours.

In terms of the vaccine programme, 1,746,912 doses of vaccine have been administered in Ireland. 1,267,167 people have received their first dose, while 479,745 people have received their second dose.

The five-day moving average is currently 406.

Elsewhere, the EU has concluded a deal with Pfizer-BioNTech for up to 1.8 billion extra doses of its Covid-19 vaccine, according to European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

In a post on social media, she said: "Happy to announce that the EU Commission has just approved a contract for guaranteed 900 million doses (+900 million options) with Pfizer-BioNTech for 2021-2023," she tweeted from an EU summit in Portugal. Other contracts and other vaccine technologies will follow."
