Covid-19 Ireland: Thousands more cases confirmed as 'we don't know' if Omicron is here

There have been a further 3,735 cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland.

As of 8am today, 566 coronavirus patients are in hospital, of which 117 are in ICU.

It comes as two cases of the new Omicron variant have been detected in the UK.

NPHET member Dr Cillian de Gascun yesterday said it was "certainly possible" the strain had already made its way to Ireland.

Today, Minister Eamon Ryan said "we don't know" if it is present in this country yet, but a lot of testing is taking place.

He said it will be a few weeks before scientists can tell if the variant can get around vaccines.

NPHET's epidemiological team is meeting this weekend to discuss the strain and the situation across Europe, where a number of Omicron cases have already been found.
