Covid-19 Ireland: The counties in danger of restrictions this week after 678 weekend cases

A number of counties face the real risk of level three restrictions this week after another weekend of high Covid-19 cases.

There were a total of 678 cases in the last 48 hours - 248 cases were confirmed on Saturday with a further 430 on Sunday.

And a number of counties have seen significant jumps in that period.

Dublin and Donegal already have level three restrictions with the latter's only beginning last Friday at midnight.

316 of the new cases at the weekend were confirmed to be in Dublin as it looks to contain the virus spread.

Donegal saw another 60 cases with restrictions not likely to have an impact until another week or so on figures.

Cork has started to become an outbreak area with 90 cases over the weekend after previously having a great record.

While Galway saw a big jump of 23 on Sunday which has been a cause for concern.

Minister Stephen Donnelly warned over the weekend that four counties are currently being watched.

Mr Donnelly said there are no plans for the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) to call an emergency meeting this week, however he warned that could change.

"There are four counties which are being looked at very carefully and they are Cork, Galway, Louth and Wicklow," he added.
