Covid-19 Ireland: The 7 groups of people that are exempt from PCR tests at Dublin Airport

Mandatory PCR testing is set to be introduced at Dublin Airport for all arrivals into Ireland.

A negative test can either be taken 72 hours before arriving if it's a PCR test or 48 hours for an antigen test.

New strict measures have been introduced due to the discovery of the new Covid-19 Omicron variant.

The new requirements come into force at 00:01am on Friday, December 3.

However, these strict rules do not apply to every person making their way to Dublin Airport.

In total, there are seven groups of people who have exemptions from the PCR testing requirements.

The exemptions apply to the following:

  • People who are travelling in the course of their duties and possess an annexe 3 certificate or are a heavy goods vehicle or are maritime or aviation crew.
  • Patients travelling to Ireland who are in need of urgent medical assistance which has been confirmed by a registered medical practitioner.
  • Children aged 11 or under.
  • Passengers whose journey originated in Northern Ireland and have not been overseas for the previous 14 days prior to arriving at Dublin Airport.
  • Gardai and members of the Defence Forces travelling to Ireland in the performing of their duties.
  • A person who travels to the state due to an arrest warrant, extradition proceedings, or other mandatory legal obligations.
  • Elected politicians and their staff where travelling to Ireland is required to continue performing his/her duties

There are a number of safety measures currently in place at Dublin Airport.

In line with current EU regulations, access to Terminal 1 and 2 is reserved for passengers, flight crew and airport employees.

When a passenger arrives at Dublin Airport, a boarding pass or passport needs to be shown to airport security.

The meeting point for arriving passengers has also changed for Terminal 1 and 2. For T1, the meeting point is outside the main terminal while the glass walkway now operates as Terminal 2's meeting point.

Hand sanitisers and plexiglass screens have been installed throughout the airport to keep contact between customers and staff to a minimum.
