Covid-19 Ireland: Survey shows how long average person is contagious after catching virus

Day ten is the day to aim for when it comes to overcoming Covid-19 as most people will no longer be contagious after then, according to new research.

By the tenth day after Covid-19 infections begin, most people won't be contagious, as long as the symptoms have improved over the previous days and they no longer have a fever.

And people may actually be most likely to spread the virus in the 48 hours before any symptoms appear, due to the fact that a lot of people would be less likely to isolate themselves if they feel fine and have no symptoms.

The time from being exposed to Covid-19 to experiencing symptoms is believed to range from 2 to 14 days - although in the majority of cases, symptoms appear after 5 days, according to Harvard Medical School.

If you've been vaccinated but get a breakthrough infection you can still be contagious to others - but you are far less likely to transmit it than someone who is unvaccinated.

Infections in those who are vaccinated also clear quicker than those who are not - 5.5 days compared to 7.5 for the unvaccinated.

Most people with mild infections will feel better in one to two weeks.

However, a recent study from the American Centre for Disease Control (CDC) discovered that it may take longer for some with mild symptoms.
