Covid-19 Ireland analysis: Six counties at highest risk of Level Four after spike in new cases

Six counties have seen a worrying increase in the number of new coronavirus cases over the last two weeks.

Currently, the entire country is placed at Level Three on the Government's Living with Covid roadmap.

However a move to Level Four in certain areas cannot be ruled out, particularly if the rate of new infections continues to soar.

One of the key measures used by health officials to determine local restrictions is the 14-day confirmed case incidence rate per 100,000 population.

Donegal remains the hardest-hit region in the country by this metric with an incidence of 293.4.

However a number of others are starting catch up, most notably Monaghan on 226.4.

This is even higher than Dublin, which has been the epicentre of the outbreak in Ireland so far, with the capital currently reporting an incidence of 162.3.

Concerning trends are also emerging in Roscommon (153.4), Longford (151.7), Clare (143.1) and Cavan (133.9).

Earlier this evening health officials confirmed 611 more people had tested positive for Covid-19 in Ireland, while five further people have died.

The latest figures were announced by the Department of Health.

Dublin was once again the hardest-hit area in the country with 218 new cases, followed by Cork with 63.
