Covid-19 Ireland: New list of top ten worst-hit towns and areas as cases skyrocket

A number of areas have seen cases skyrocket over the last two weeks, new statistics show.

Ballyjamesduff in Co Cavan is the worst-hit region in the country, according to figures released by the Department of Health today.

One of the key metrics used by health officials is the 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

As a whole, Ireland has an incidence of around 300.

However many towns and areas have surged past this number including Ballyjamesduff, with a rate of 1484.4, Ratoath, at 1365.6, and Galway City-Central at 1018.7.

Meath as a whole is now seeing concerning growth, with Ashbourne making the list with an incidence of 887.2, and Navan not far off with a rate of 621.2.

Cavan, which has been the epicentre of the outbreak in Ireland recently, has two areas on the list, with Cavan-Belturbet reporting a rate of 928.4.

Cork has also seen a steady increase in infections and the worst-hit area there is Cork South-Central at 625.9.

Here are the 14-day incidence rates of the top ten worst-hit towns and regions in the country right now:

1. Ballyjamesduff - 1484.4

2. Ratoath - 1365.6

3. Galway City-Central - 1018.7

4. Cavan-Belturbet - 928.4

5. Ashbourne - 887.2

6. Maynooth - 740

7. Sligo-Strandhill - 733.6

8. Gorey - 727.6

9. Connemara-South - 726.3

10. Cork South-Central - 625.9
