Covid-19 Ireland lockdown update: Alarm as one county sees cases skyrocket with restrictions looming

Alarm has been raised after Donegal saw its rate of coronavirus cases skyrocket.

The county has reported a 14-day confirmed case incidence per 100,000 population of a staggering 122.5.

This is not far behind Dublin, which has been the hardest-hit area in the country up to now with a rate of 140.3, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

And more could soon follow with Louth currently registering an incidence rate of 106.3. Next is Waterford, on 97.3.

All three counties could soon join Dublin on Level Three restrictions as NPHET meet today to discuss what further measures need to be taken.

It is understood that the two-week incidence rate is one of the key metrics used by health officials to decide if a lockdown will be implemented.

Some other counties with a worryingly high rate are Wicklow, on 76.5 and Kildare, on 70.6.

However there is no doubt that certain areas of the capital are the hotspots in terms of new infections, with Dublin North West seeing its incidence rate break the 200 mark today.

Dublin North Central, on 161.1, and Dublin South West, on 152.3, have also reported a significant number of new cases over the last two weeks.

The Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn last night admitted concern at the figures in Donegal, Waterford and Louth.

The doctor also pleaded with the public to reduce their contacts.

He said: “The single most important thing that people all across the country need to do now is to reduce their social contacts. We all need to cut down on discretionary social activities.

“Meeting fewer people means fewer opportunities for the virus to transmit. Please prioritise who you choose to meet and try to keep your social network as small as possible.”
