Covid-19 Ireland: List of counties heading towards 'lockdown' as cases surge

More counties could be heading towards a form of 'local lockdown' as coronavirus cases have surged in a number of areas.

Dublin remains the hardest-hit area in the country, with a 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 population of 114.2.

However there are now other regions starting to catch up to this, with Co Louth now reporting an incidence of 91.6.

This is followed by Co Leitrim, on 81.1, and Co Waterford, on 80.9.

This is a big jump from the same figures just five days ago, which saw Louth with an incidence rate of 49.7, Leitrim on 65.5, and Waterford on just 36.2.

However there is no doubt that the capital remains the epicentre of the recent outbreak in Ireland, with an explosion of cases in certain areas.

The Dublin North West region has hit an incidence of a staggering 173.4, while Dublin South East stands at 135.8.

Three other districts in the capital are currently reporting a 14-day incidence rate over 100. They are Dublin South West, Dublin West, and Dublin North Central.

It comes as health officials recommended 'local lockdown' measures be put in place for Dublin due to the high rates of the virus there.

Cabinet is due to meet this afternoon to discuss the new restrictions, which could see indoor dining in bars and restaurants outlawed.
