Covid-19 Ireland: Leo Varadkar expects NPHET to recommend more Christmas restrictions

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said he expects more restrictions recommended before Christmas.

NPHET will have a crunch meeting tomorrow and the Tanaiste has listed numerous restrictions that the public health team may call for.

He has also said that it's expected that Omicron will be the dominant variant in Ireland by next week.

Speaking on the Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk, the Tanaiste said: “I would expect more recommendations around the management of close contacts, recommendations to decrease the amount of social mixing, and recommendations around international travel.”

While he said he doesn't like seeing businesses restricted or having to close, he added "if it is the case restrictions are required to protect life and public health… then that’s what we will do.”

He said if there is any change in restrictions before Christmas, the Government will inform people "very soon" and there would be a "few days notice" before any new rules were set.
