And no further deaths related to the coronavirus were confirmed by health chiefs today. So far 4,906 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic related illness.

Of the cases announced today:

  • 203 are men / 250 are women

As of 1st May 2021, 1,591,888 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland:

  • 1,146,562 people have received their first dose
  • 445,326 people have received their second dose

The latest update comes as it emerged that young women are more likely to refuse a COVID-19 vaccine.

A study of 1,000 people online was conducted in Ireland and in the UK.

It found that 75% of women aged under 30 were significantly less likely to say they would accept a vaccine, with fewer than 70% indicating a positive response and 20% indicating high levels of uncertainty.

The study by NUI Galway and the University of Huddersfield showed that women, in particular, young women under 30 were significantly less likely to say they would accept a COVID jab.

Around seven in 10 women said they would get the vaccine, one in 10 said they would not and two in 10 were unsure about it.
