Covid-19 Ireland: ICU bed capacity to increase by end of 2022, Taoiseach says

The number of ICU beds in the country is set to rise, according to Taoiseach Micheal Martin.

Speaking in Leinster House today, the Taoiseach said by the end of 2022, the total number of ICU beds in the country will rise to 340, up from around 301.

There had previously been a commitment to reach 330 ICU beds by the end of 2021.

The lack of ICU beds across the country has been highlighted due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2019, Ireland had one of the lowest rates of ICU beds out of any OECD country at just 5.2 beds per 1000 people compared to the OECD average of 14.1.

The Government had funded for a total of 321 ICU beds by the end of this year, but due to "recruitment challenges" the final number will be around 301.

As of this morning, 130 people were being treated in ICU with Covid-19 after four people were discharged but another 10 were admitted.

Another 39 people were admitted to hospital with Covid-19, while 74 were discharged. A total of 638 people are currently being treated in hospital with Covid-19.
