Covid-19 Ireland: Health expert predicts it will be 'several years' until WHO announce end of pandemic

A public health expert has said she believes it will be "several years" until the WHO announce an end to the pandemic.

Professor Maggie Rae, who is the President of the UK Faculty of Public Health, has said the pandemic won't end soon due to the "huge task" of trying to get vaccines to people all around the world.

She said on Morning Ireland today: "Well, I would say as a public health professional that all pandemics come to an end, of that I am very confident.

"The question is, when? When will the WHO announce that the Covid pandemic is over, because its the WHO who announce pandemics and they then announce when the pandemic is over.

"I think that's going to be several years because we've got this huge task of trying to get vaccines right across the world."

The professor called the vaccine a "scientific miracle".

"But we will have a better year next year then we had this year. I mean, it's a scientific miracle that we have the vaccine.

"And I'm so delighted that people in the public have listened to the messages and your vaccination rates are actually extremely good, better than we have in the UK."
