Covid-19 Ireland: Government leaders agree return to school date despite Union objection

The three Coalition leaders have agreed to have schools return as normal in the face of objections from unions, it is understood.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has also cleared plans to have schools return on Thursday.

The Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Green Leader were reportedly told at the meeting it is safe for students to return to classrooms despite the massive surge in Covids cases.

The Omicron variant smashed all previous record daily case numbers over the festive period with over 21,000 recorded in a single day.

Cabinet Ministers will meet on Wednesday and will request the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, to examine relaxing the rules around restriction of movements for fully vaccinated close contacts of confirmed cases of Covid-19.

NPHET is due to meet on Thursday and Dr Holohan may advise the Government to tighten Covid measures but a senior source has said the Cabinet has no plans to bring in more restrictions when they meet on Wednesday.

The union which represents teachers in secondary schools has said it will be proposing a delayed and staggered reopening of schools at a meeting due to take place today with with Education Minister Norma Foley.

The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) which represents 18,500 teachers across the country said it is “deeply concerned” that Minister Foley may reopen schools on Thursday “without putting in place additional measures necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students and school staff.”
