Covid-19 Ireland: Further 12,138 cases with 52 deaths reported

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 6,843 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In addition, on Monday 17 January, 5,295 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal, giving a total of 12,138 Covid cases.

There has been a total of 6,087 deaths related to COVID-19 notified in Ireland.

This includes 52 deaths newly notified in the past week since last Wednesday.

As of 8am today, 910 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 90 are in ICU.

It comes as the Government today announced that a €1,000 payment will be made to a number of frontline staff who worked throughout the pandemic.

This tax-free recognition payment will be a once-off payment and is set to cost the state over €100 million.

On top of this payment, a new public holiday on March 18 followed by a remembrance day for those who lost their lives during the pandemic will be held.

Over 9000 people have died on the island of Ireland due to Covid.

The public holiday will then move to its permanent date of February 1 to mark St Brigid's Day.
