Covid-19 Ireland: Four counties see stunning drop in cases since Level Five lockdown began

Four counties saw a stunning drop in cases since the start of the Level Five lockdown, new figures show.

One of the key measures used by health officials in assessing the progress of the pandemic here is the 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

Cavan, which remains the hardest-hit region in the country, has seen its rate slashed nearly in half, down from 1013.4 in figures released on the day Level Five began, to just 590.7 last night.

Meath and Monaghan have also seen a significant drop in their incidence in the same period.

While there is further promising news in Leitrim, which saw its rate drop from 262.1 to 106.1.

The number of new cases announced by health officials each day has also fallen below 1,000 for all of the last seven days.

There has also been a consistent drop in the number of close contacts reported by cases.
