Covid-19 Ireland cases update as 552 new infections and two further deaths confirmed

Ireland has recorded another 552 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

Tragically, two more people have lost their lives after battling the deadly virus.

The latest figures have been announced in a statement from the National Public Health Emergency Team.

It brings the total number of cases in the Republic to 62,002, while the death toll now stands at 1,915.

Dublin again saw the highest number of new infections with 173, followed by Cork which recorded 86.

Limerick had 30, while the remaining 223 are spread across all other counties.

The new cases were split among 275 men and 275 women, with the average age being 36.

Of those diagnosed, 63% are under the age of 45.

The news comes after Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly praised everyone for their hard work since lockdown began.

Minister Donnelly said: "Thanks to huge efforts by individuals, families, community groups, clubs and businesses across the country, Ireland is now bucking the trend in Europe in terms of new cases of #Covid

"I just want to say thank you to everyone for doing so much to fight this virus."

Ireland's 14-day cumulative cases incidence rate is now amongst one of the lowest in Europe.

Cautious optimism

After 416 new cases were confirmed on Saturday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said the country is going in the right direction but it isn't time to get carried away.

Dr Holohan said: "We are making progress in suppressing the current rise of COVID-19.

"Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence.

"Nationally, our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.0.

“We are working collectively to achieve suppression, but it is too early to ease our efforts.

"The incidence is decreasing in young adults but it continues to rise in those aged over 75.

"We have more to do but we are on the right track.”
