Covid-19 Ireland cases today update as 381 new infections confirmed after Dr Tony Holohan warning

A total of 381 more people have tested positive for coronavirus in Ireland.

While there are currently 110 patients being treated for the virus in Irish hospitals.

The latest figures were announced by the Department of Health this evening.

It comes after Dr Tony Holohan said there is is a concern over the rise of the new Indian variant, as 72 cases have already been found in the country, the majority of which are in the East.

When questioned as to whether this rise would affect NPHET's advice on restrictions, Dr Holohan said: "We're not thinking about rolling back some of the relaxation of restrictions but we are getting new evidence all the time.

"We give our advice on the issue of what we know and the evidence we have.

"We didn't have the level of concern about the variant when we gave our last advice to the Government that we have now. We'll take that into account when we meet next Thursday.

"I think that there's enough evidence there for there to be concern about the spread of the variant. We think we're heading in the direction of a potential problem. If this variant has all the advantages that it could have, it will probably become dominant."

Dr Holohan also addressed the potential of international travel by the summer, something which had been considered during the week after the introduction of the digital green certificate by the EU.

He added: "I know that all these things are being given consideration across the Government. We all want to see international travel happening - but only when it is safe to do so."

The Chief Medical Officer stressed that there were easy ways to ensure that the variant stayed under control: "The rise of this variant places an emphasis on the things that do work - the public health measures that we've been advising for 10-15 months. We need to redouble our efforts as individuals to slow down its path.

"We need to keep this disease at a level that's not getting out of control. We're increasing vaccinations every day and they are two hugely important factors. "
