Covid-19 Ireland cases today: Further 584 cases confirmed and 20 deaths announced

A further 584 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this evening.

Sadly another 20 Coviid-19 related deaths have been reported.

The figures were confirmed by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

They come as Ireland's mandatory quarantine system took effect from today as Dublin Airport welcomed its first arrivals.

Members of the Defence Forces were on hand to escort arrivals from 'at risk' countries to their hotels where they will begin their mandatory 14 day isolation.

Anyone found guilty of breaking these new laws could face fines of up to €5,000 and or a six-month prison sentence.

The majority of Friday's flights are from the UK with six coming from Amsterdam and four coming from Paris - none of which fall under the quarantine guidelines.

Austria is the only other country on the 'high risk' list which has a direct flight to Dublin but no service is due until Saturday.

From early Friday morning, people arriving from the selected countries will have to book their mandatory two-week hotel stay through a Government-run website and pre-pay for their stay.

Meanwhile children having playdates with others outside of their household has become a “significant issue”, the chief executive of the HSE has said.

Paul Reid said transmission levels within schools were not high but what was causing concern for public health officials was the increased socialising outside of the classroom.

“It’s not transmitting highly within a school,” he said.

“What is currently happening is there’s a lot of activity outside of school, and within communities.

“Playdates is very clearly one of the aspects of it coming through, or visits between households, very clear from our public health doctors that it’s a very significant issue.”
