Covid-19 Ireland cases today: Further 566 cases announced as 25 deaths confirmed

A further 566 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this evening.

Meanwhile sadly another 25 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported.

The figures were confirmed by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

It comes as Ireland has been warned by health officials that a level of concern remains over the ‘fragile’ state of the Covid-19 situation.

A letter sent to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly back on February 25 which was published today says that Ireland continues to see progress against all disease indicators.

Although it noted that this progress is much slower than seen previously.

NPHET has also recommended the idea of wearing masks in crowded outdoor areas for those who would be considered medically vulnerable.

Should this be implemented in future, it would be the first time health officials recommend the wearing of face masks outdoors in Ireland - a measure in place in many other European cities.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn also confirmed that there is evidence to back up the idea of “presumptive immunity", which is the period time after infection with Covid-19 where a person is at lower risk of reinfection.

Speaking on tonight's figures he added: “Through the hard work and sacrifice of the vast majority of people, key disease indicators continue on a positive trajectory. However, we are still seeing outbreaks in the community, including those linked to extended families, workplaces and funerals. We need to keep up our guard against the B117 variant of COVID-19, which we know is dominant in Ireland at present and highly transmissible.

“Our willingness to stick with the public health advice in our daily routine has brought us the progress that we can see today. Together, through staying at home as much as possible, social distancing, hand washing and wearing face coverings, we can continue to drive down the spread of COVID-19.”
