Covid-19 Ireland cases today: Further 1,180 cases confirmed with 362 in hospital

A further 1,180 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this evening.

Meanwhile 362 people remain in hospital with Covid, 59 of which are in ICU.

The figures come as Ireland prepares to move forward with the easing of restrictions in the coming weeks and months.

October 22 has been earmarked as the day which will see most legal Covid-19 rules scrapped with society set to be reopened fully once again.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said Ireland should “take some heart” from early indications that Covid rates may be declining.

While incidence rates of the virus are among the highest in the EU, health officials and politicians have consistently pointed to the success of Ireland’s vaccination programme.

Speaking in Cork on Saturday at a naval service event, Micheal Martin said: “We take some heart from indications that incidence levels may be on a downward trajectory.”

He also said the Government would be monitoring any impact the return of schools has on the spread of the virus.

“It is extremely important that we remain vigilant as a society and we can progress in terms of the steps that have now been laid out,” Mr Martin said.

As part of the easing of restrictions, numbers permitted to attend indoor and outdoor events will increase from Monday.

Nearly 90% of adults in Ireland are vaccinated, according to the latest figures.
