Covid-19 Ireland cases today: Another jump as 79 deaths confirmed, 1,414 new infections

Ireland has recorded 1,414 new cases of Covid-19, health chiefs have confirmed.

Tragically, 79 further people have lost their lives after fighting the deadly virus.

The latest figures were released in a statement by the National Public Health Emergency Team on Saturday evening.

As of 2pm, there were 1,492 confirmed cases at hospitals nationwide, 211 of which were in intensive care.

Of those diagnosed, 742 were women and 667 were men, while the average age was 39.

Dublin had the highest number of cases at 608, followed by Cork (105), Galway (96) and Meath (65).

The news comes amid worrying news surrounding Ireland's falling vaccination rate.

New statistics show the rate has fallen from a figure of 19 per 10,000 a day on January 15 to just 11 per 10,000 on Wednesday.

And what will anger the public even more is that if you lived in the North you would get a vaccine five times quicker, as the same indicator for the UK is up at 52.

There were 161,500 vaccines administered up to Wednesday, according to the HSE.

The slowdown comes as supplies to the EU are threatened by the AstraZeneca row.

The Irish Mirror is using the same source that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly used two weeks ago when he tweeted a picture boasting about the figure.

He said it was the highest in Europe at the time, but we are now well down the charts with other EU states like France, Poland and Romania all outperforming us.

Labour leader Alan Kelly has called on Mr Donnelly to be straight with the people on statistics.
