Covid-19 Ireland cases today: 525 new cases announced and 9 deaths confirmed

A further 525 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this afternoon.

Meanwhile sadly another 9 Covid-19 related deaths have been confirmed.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

7 deaths occurred in March and 2 in February.

This morning it emerged that the government's two key priorities ahead of the next lockdown decision are the phased return to work of construction workers, and the return of outdoor sports for children.

It is also expected that the 5km exercise limit will be extended, and this was identified last month by political leaders as one area they would look to change at the start of April.

It comes after Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he will give the Irish public an update on "how we see April panning out" before April 5.

The Fianna Fail leader added that he understands that people are "fed up" of lockdown restrictions but wouldn't get drawn into speculating about lifting certain measures.

Mr Martin was responding to comments made by Deputy CMO Dr Ronan Glynn, who said that restrictions may continue until June.

Speaking in Cork on Friday, he added: "We do understand and get it that people are fed up.

"I am not going to speculate, but we will give people clear indications in advance of April 5 as to how we see April panning out and I don't believe in speculating beyond that."

Meanwhile anti-lockdown protests were staged throughout Dublin city today in defiance of Covid-19 restrictions.

Roughly 200 people met in Dublin’s Phoenix Par today before travelling through the city and down to Custom House Quay.

Some of those in attendance were carrying anti-vaccine placards and gathering in spite of public health guidelines forbidding large groups meeting up.

The protest itself was peaceful and monitored by Gardai while there were no speeches or chants during the event, which had been organised for 2pm at Wellington Monument.
