Covid-19 Ireland cases today: 520 cases announced and 1 more death confirmed

A further 520 coronavirus cases have been confirmed this evening.

Meanwhile, one Covid-related death has been reported.

The figures were confirmed by the National Public Health Emergency Team this afternoon.

The total number of confirmed cases of the virus in Ireland is now 231,119. There have been a total of 4,588 deaths related to Covid-19 here to date.

Health authorities have reported that 359 people with Covid-19 are in hospital. 81 of these admissions are in ICU.

In terms of today's new cases, 242 are in Dublin, 36 in Meath, 30 in Offaly, 29 in Kildare, 25 in Wicklow.

14 additional hospitalisations occurred in the past 24 hours.

Of the cases notified today, 258 are men and 262 are women, while 79% are under 45 years of age. The average age is 28 years old.

As of March 19, 2021, 668,529 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland: 487,466 people have received their first dose, with 181,063 people receiving their second dose.

Earlier today, the Taoiseach urged the country to “stick with” the current lockdown measures to avoid a deadly fourth wave of Covid.

Mr Martin said that “we need to stay vigilant” in order to avoid the same type of rapid escalation that befall many of our EU colleagues.

Mr Martin told Bryan Dobson on RTE’s News at One: “Your efforts have borne fruit…. it’s extremely important that we keep with this.”

He added: “I’m saying that for between now and the 5th of April, we will come forward with a plan.”

During previous interviews, the Taoiseach previously indicated the areas that could see a relaxation of restrictions on April 5 include outdoor activities, sport, an extension to the 5km travel limit and more employment in the construction industry.

Elsewhere, the HSE's lead for infection control, Professor Martin Cormican, has said that Ireland is in danger of facing another wave of Covid-19 cases.

Prof Cormican described the case numbers as "stuck" and possibly rising.

Speaking with RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland programme, he said: "[Cases] are pretty much stuck, possibly going back upwards a bit. There's a real danger of another surge.

"We certainly all hoped to be in a better place than we are. We need to deal with the reality of where we are and we need to be very careful."

Prof Cormican described the increase in case numbers as disappointing and urged the public to continue in their social distancing efforts because the more people come together the more the virus spreads.

"That's really hard because what's got us through so far is that people have put up with a great deal of isolation and loneliness and burdened it as necessary to control the virus.

"Unfortunately it is still necessary because the new strain does seem to spread faster than the one we were used to. And that makes everything harder and makes it harder for everyone."

He added: "The vast majority of people are trying really hard to adhere to the restrictions as much of the time as they possibly can. "There are some people who are less careful and I suppose we continue to appeal to them and to explain to them that the risks that they're taking is not just a risk for them, the risk that they're taking is a risk for everyone they know and care about in the two weeks after they take that risk."
