Covid-19 Ireland cases today: 271 new cases confirmed with 77 people in hospital

A further 271 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this evening.

77 people remain in Irish hospitals with Covid-19, 27 of which are in ICU.

The figures were confirmed by the Department of Health this evening

They come as Ireland ploughs ahead with plans to fully reopen the country once again with more and more Covid restrictions being eased.

The Taoiseach marked a "significant" day for the country following the return of outdoor dining for pubs and restaurants.

"Today was a very significant day for pubs and restaurants with the reopening of outdoor hospitality that of course re-illustrates the progress we are making in reopening society and our economy," he said in a video posted to social media.

"The vaccination programme continues to roll out very effectively and efficiently.

"Close to 55% of the population have had one dose with close to 26% fully vaccinated.

"A tremendous tribute must be paid to the HSE, GPs and all those who have been involved in the vaccination programme."

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast on Tuesday morning, the Minister for Education Norma Foley meanwhile confirmed that every classroom has been set up successfully ahead of the start of the Leaving Cert tomorrow.

She said: “We are operating the exam centres on the back of very strong public health advice. We did obviously operate the exams very successfully in November and that was very positive learning experience for us.

“So, I want to assure students that all the measures that need to be in place will be in place. There will be reduced numbers in all the rooms. There will be additional exam centres. All the control and mitigation measures that need to be there will be there.

“They can absolutely rest easy that what needs to be done within the exam environment for their benefit to allow them to do the best they can do, it absolutely will be in place.”
