Covid-19 Ireland cases today: 1,459 new cases confirmed with 296 people in hospital

A further 1,459 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed this evening.

Meanwhile 296 people are currently in hospital 65 of which are being treated in ICU.

The figures were confirmed by the National Public Health Emergency Team.

They come as Taoiseach Micheal said that children between the ages of five and 11 could soon receive a Covid jab if the medical guidance permitted it.

“I have no issue with the principle of (vaccinating children as young as five)” the Taoiseach said.

“But I would be bound by public-health guidance in respect of it, because public health will have to weigh up the benefits for the child in respect of receiving the vaccine as opposed to the risks to the child.”

Last week, children aged five to 12 made up nearly a quarter of all Covid cases.

Around 29,700 Irish children in this cohort have contracted the virus since the start of the pandemic.

Pfizer-BionNTech have reported that their jab has been proven safe and effective for children in that age cohort.

Once approval comes from the European Medicines Agency, the National Immunisation Advisory Council (NIAC) and Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan, then Irish children will be well on their way to getting vaccinated.
