Taoiseach Micheal Martin has revealed that almost half of all adults have been given a booster jab just days before Christmas.
Almost half of the adult population (49.9%) have been given a booster or third dose, which equates to 37.4% of the entire population.
The Taoiseach was "very encouraged" to see such a high uptake in boosters and pledged to "keep the foot on the pedal into the new year."
This comes on the back of two record-breaking days for boosters administered.
109,000 doses of the vaccine including 106,000 boosters were administered yesterday in vaccine centres, GPs and pharmacies across Ireland.
In the past three days, 303,000 boosters have been administered bringing the total number to 1.87 million.
"We've seen around 1.8m doses of the booster administered to date, 300,000 in the last three days, about 49 per cent of the adult population have had the booster now, and all of this is very, very important because it will give protection against serious illness and take the pressure off in terms of hospitalisations and for our intensive care units," the Taoiseach told Cork Beo.
"I want to thank the people for coming forward in such numbers, and also the GPs, pharmacies and vaccinations, who have really been phenomenal over the last few weeks."
As of 8am this morning, 390 people are being treated in hospital with Covid-19 with 100 of these cases in ICU. These are the lowest numbers since October.
