Covid-19 Ireland: 892 new cases confirmed as 333 battle virus in hospital

There have been 892 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland in the last 24 hours.

As of 8am today, 333 patients are hospitalised, of which 64 are in ICU.

The five day moving average is 1,172.

It comes after Health Minister Stephen Donnelly reacted to protests outside the family home of the Chief Medical Officer.

A group of people protesting against Covid-19 measures gathered at Dr Tony Holohan’s home on Sunday.

The gathering saw protestors rallying against the coronavirus vaccine and masks.

Some people carried placards questioning the safety of the jab, while others had signs stating, 'Leave our kids alone'.

The gathering was streamed live on social media from outside the Chief Medical Officer's Dublin home where he lives with his two children.

Gardai confirmed they had attended a protest in Dublin 6 on Sunday afternoon but did not refer to the CMO.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí were alerted to a number of protesters outside a residence in Dublin this afternoon Sunday, 3rd October, 2021, at approximately 1pm.

“Gardaí attended and the protest ended without incident at 2.30pm.”

Reacting to the protests outside Dr Holohan’s homes, Minister Donnelly said it is a “security issue” and that he prefers not to comment but said there is no place for targeting people’s homes.

He told reporters in Cork: “Those are security issues but in general, as I said when it happened originally to Simon Harris a few years ago, I think there is a very important and legitimate place for protest in this country, outside Leinster House or outside Departments.

“I just don’t think there’s any place for targeting people’s homes in our country.”
