Covid-19 Ireland: 7 counties report staggering cases rise in just five days after Christmas surge

Ireland is currently in the grips of a third wave of coronavirus as cases continue to surge across the country.

One of the key statistics used by health experts to assess the scale of an outbreak here is the 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

And Monaghan is now the hardest-hit region in the country by this metric, with a staggering rate of 783.6.

However even more stark is the fact that this is up from 384.5 just five days earlier.

Similarly, other border regions including Louth, Cavan and Donegal have seen a noticeable jump in infections, as have Limerick and Sligo.

And one of the largest spikes in the country is in Co Mayo, which went from reporting a rate of 129.5 to 505.7 in just five days.

Although there is some relative good news in Dublin where the growth has been slower than many areas, with the incidence in the capital moving from 265 five days ago, to 371.1 last night.
