Covid-19 Ireland: 62 fully-vaccinated people admitted to ICU since April in 'breakthrough infections'

Some 62 fully-vaccinated people have been admitted to Ireland's ICUs with Covid-19 since the beginning of April.

The "breakthrough infections" count for just 19% of Ireland's intensive care patients in the period from April 1 to September 18.

All of these 62 people had received their complete vaccine 14 days or more before they were admitted to intensive care, the HPSC report shows.

In the same period, 335 people, aged 15 or over, were reported to the HPSC as admitted to ICU with a confirmed Covid infection.

238 cases, or 71%, reported as not having received a vaccine.

97 people, 29%, were reported as having received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Of the 62 fully-vaccinated ICU patients;

  • 38 were male and 24 were female
  • Median age was 67 years (range: 30 to 88 years)
  • Mean age was 65 years
  • 60 cases (97%) were reported to have an underlying medical condition
  • 12 cases (19%) were reported to have died

It comes as a further 1,163 cases have been confirmed in Ireland in the last 24 hours.

There are now 297 people in hospital with 61 in ICU.
