Covid-19 Ireland: 16,986 more cases confirmed with over 800 in hospital

The Department of Health has today been notified of 16,986 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

As of 8am today, 804 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised of which 93 are in ICU.

The Department said: "Given the current high incidence, the daily case number is based on positive SARS-CoV-2 results uploaded to the HSE COVID Care Tracker the preceding day. These data are provisional."

This comes as parents can now register their children aged between 5 to 11 years for the Covid-19 vaccine.

The long wait is finally over with appointments expected to be offered soon after registration.

A HSE Spokesperson said: “Clinical trials showed that this vaccine was highly effective at preventing Covid-19 in children.

“Though serious illness from Covid-19 is rare in this age group, they are even less likely to become seriously ill with Covid-19 if they are vaccinated.

“All vaccines are tested before they are approved for use in Ireland by the European Medicines Agency.

“We know from listening to parents that they have questions and concerns about the Covid-19 vaccine. Parents should get their information from a trusted source, such as hse.ie or a medical professional when making the decision to vaccinate their child.”
