Covid-19 Ireland: 15 counties with skyrocketing number of cases after two-week surge

A total of 15 counties now have a incidence rate of confirmed cases that is over 100, new figures show.

The latest statistics from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show that Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Limerick, Longford, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath have all broken the 100 barrier.

A number of these counties are also now reporting a 14-day incidence rate even higher than Dublin, which was previously the epicentre of the outbreak in Ireland.

The rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population is one of the key measures used by health officials to determine if lockdowns are needed.

And Donegal is currently the hardest-hit area in the country by this metric, with a staggering incidence of 326.0.

It is followed by Monaghan on 270.4, while Cavan (199.5) and Clare (198.6) have also seen cases shoot up in recent times.

The latest figures released today by the HPSC cover the period up to Thursday, October 8.

By comparison, just two weeks ago on Saturday, September 26, only three counties, Donegal, Dublin and Louth, were reporting an incidence over 100.

At that stage, Donegal was still the worst affected region, but had a far lower rate of just 185.3.

While the likes of Cavan and Clare were sitting on just 47.3 and 47.1 respectively.
