Florida’s COVID-19 case surge continued to ease after Florida reported 17,506 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the 7-day trend fell to its lowest level since Aug. 3, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Hospitalizations for COVID-19 also continued to drop with 14,126 patients in Florida hospitals as of Sept. 1, CDC data shows, and the daily average for new admissions continuing a two-week decline.
The state is now averaging 18,378 new cases per day, potentially signaling Florida has rounded the peak of its largest COVID surge to date.
Florida did not add any new deaths to its total on Friday. The state reports deaths to the CDC based on the date of death, meaning death numbers from the past several days are incomplete.
Despite an easing of the recent case surge, Florida ranked sixth in the nation for average daily COVID cases per capita and second for average COVID deaths per capita as of Sept. 1, according to New York Times data.
At least 45,909 Floridians have died of COVID since the start of the pandemic.
