Covid-19 in Bristol results in new death as omicron variant spreads across UK

Another Covid-19 patient in the Bristol area has died as the Omicron variant continues to spread across the UK.

A person in South Gloucestershire has died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus, figures show.

The death comes as the Prime Minister announced that everyone over the age of 18 who has had two coronavirus vaccine doses is now eligible to book a third booster jab to halt the spread of the new, potentially more dangerous, variant.

In the Bristol area, 516 new cases of the virus were detected in the last 24 hours on record - 272 in Bristol, 117 in North Somerset amd 127 in South Gloucestershire.

The latest death means that 1,347 people have now died of Covid-19 in the Bristol area since the start of the pandemic.

Across the United Kingdom, 48,854 new positive cases were recorded, bringing the total since the pandemic began to 10,819,515.

And 52 people have died with the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of nationwide deaths to 146,439.

The UK is continuing its vaccine programme, and 46,742,069 people have received two doses of a Covid-19 jab.

And 23,124,829 people have now received a booster jab.

  • Bristol - 80,370 (+272)

  • North Somerset: 30,678 (+117)
